Is the Spyder a high maintenance vehicle?

As experience SpyderRyders we all know the drill.

You are stopped, filling your tank or buying an ice cream cone when the inevitable happens.

Someone stops by and says "Hey can I ask you a few questions?"

Now I've been asked how it handles, is it front wheel drive and how much did I pay for it.

All legit questions even if the how much question makes me a tad uncomfortable.

So, while filling my tank with hopefully nonethanoled fuel this guy comes up, steps over the fuel delivery line and says "Are these things as high maintenance as I've heard?"

Well for one, I don't consider the BRP maint schedule, especially the new one, particularly burdensome both in time or money.

But, I suppose if you put it up next to a modern automobile it looks stringent.

What do the SpyderTalkers think, Is the Spyder a high maintenance vehicle, compared to other toys of the same caliber?

No, I do not think so. Like any vehicle, the more regular maintenance supplied, the fewer potential problems along the way. High maintenance of itself, no. My dealer location, hours, and the costs they charge make it painful enough. Removing the panels to do anything under the cowl is a burden. But I wouldn't classify the vehicle as high maintenance, no.

IMO, you can't compare directly with a motorcycle because "there are more parts" and therefore more things to maintain. With that said, I have found both the GS (2008) and RT to be very reliable and not high maintenance.

I say no it is not a high maintenance vehicle unless you consider buying accessories part of the equation. If you have the dealer do all your mainanence then it will cost more but there is more work to get to things than on regular motorcycles and cars.

No, not high maintenance at all. To me, high maintenance would mean lots and frequent maintenance. After 62,000 miles all I have done is change tires, oil and air cleaners. I would have flushed and changed the brake fluid except that I had a brake problem (under warranty) that took care of that at no cost a few miles back.

I have had mine for almost a year. Over 5,000 miles and with the exception of a rare issue when I first bought it, have really just checked the oil and got it changed. First 600 mile service was $300 but nothing unusual after that. Like any other vehicle some are high maintenance and some are not.

We've only got 2200 miles on ours and the only issue has been a broken Heim Joint. Before buying, I too had the opinion that it was a high maintenance, unreliable vehicle due to the horror stories that I've seen in some threads. I did my homework and it seemed to me that many issues were computer related problems or flukes, but nothing widespread such as faulty cranks, etc. I do all of my own maintenance and other than normal wear and tear items, I don't expect any issues. All is good so far and it is running flawlessly.

Maybe you should ask the next person that asks this, what is high maintenance to them. If it's taking the Tupperware off, then it's about the same as a Goldwing. If it's changing fluids, then about the same as any bike with radiator. So what is high maintenance?
