Looking for recommendations for a good helmut to buy for a new rider. How much would you plan to spend, and if there are any particular brands and models to consider, I would appreciate it.

I have a silver spyder...so I got a new SHOEI silver MULTITEC helmet. The front of the helmet pivots up if you want to feel the wind on your entire face. Also easier to put on. The Silver matches my spyder perfectly. Its sort of expensive though...was around 500 bucks. Remember money is no object when it comes to your head!

We had to buy two helmets and thought price was important but I was told that fit was first on the list by a friend. Boy oh Boy was he right. After trying on a few helmets I found out that fit was sooo important. I ended up with the Shoe TZ-R and paided 299.00. My wife got a HJC but at a much lower price of 169.00. I wanted the same for her but she had problems with fit as well. I spent more then an hour and tried 5 different manufacturers. The HJC is a full face as mine but the front is in two pieces so that it opens up for her to put on her glasses. Lifting the shield on the TZ-R doesn't give her enough room to get them on. Good luck.

If you want what BRP's got, they are Scorpion helmets. Very nicely priced, extremely comfortable and one of the top rated helmets by JD Power and Associates. Wife and I both got one. They got some really cool designs also. Liners com out for color change and cleaning. Very quiet going down the road. Friend of mine was amazed and wonder why the---- he paid all the money for SHOIE

Shoei is a great helmet. Top quality. But .... not for oblong heads. Best for round heads. The Multitec is probably the best flip-u (modular) helmet available.
Arai is (IMHO) the best helmet on the market - fits an oblong head. They don't make a flip-up helmet
Schuberth concept is hard to get and overpriced but I like the flip-down sunshield
Nolan modular is good but the sunscreen is on the outside and has caused some problems - especially wind vibration.
Caberg is an excellent flip-up helmet with the flip-down sunshield. Shaped like the Shoei.
Scorpion is the most comfortable helmet I've ever owned. Had an EXO-700. Just purchased the EXO-1000 with the air-pump cheek pads and the flip-down sunshield.
My HJC Carbon Fiber is an awesome helmet that looks very unusual. When the guy I bought it from handed me the box, I told him he forgot the helmet ...... it was that light!! You can wear it all day and not have any neck fatigue.
Regarding the modular helmets. Love the convenience factor but I'm concerned with the safety factor. Snell does not approve flip-up helmets.
.... Full face is the only way to go.

I had an Arai Helmet, and I loved it...I had it painted from a man in NY....Brian the Brush.....he was really good. I pd him $250 just for the paint job. He did a fantastic job. Any way, the second helmet I got was and Icon Alliance SS. It does a great job for me because I seem to breath heavy (thus the fog). I wanted to go with a black helmet because it goes with everything. I am thinking of getting a helmet skin for it. I did get a new visor. When I get my yellow spyder, I am going to get a yellow visor (I have the clear and a silver now). I like my Icon.

One thing to think of, is you need an armored jacket as well. I have an Alpinestar jacket, Icon pants, and always boots for me. Safety # 1

I've worn an Arai Signet (good for long oval head shapes) in a XXXL for years. Still tight on my forehead and leaves a hot spot there on a long ride.

It's 7 years old and I need to replace it. Arai (which is the only manufacturer I've heard of doing a helmet for long narrow heads) has discontinued the Signet and replaced it with a Profile (i believe that's the name).
Checking them out a couple months back and they said they would have a solid yellow color in my size maybe by January of 08.

Excellent quality - but expensive. I'd sure like to find an alternative that didn't hurt my forehead.

It's a drag being cranially endowed (that's the politically correct way of saying "ya got a BIG head!")

About the safety of modular helmets yes they say there not as safe, but the comfort usually out weighs that issue. If were so stuck on the safety issue then why are we riding bikes?
I guess for me there are degrees of safety. Riding a bike is riskier than riding in a car, but you can mitigate the risk by wearing gear that provides the most safety. The guy that passes me riding a bike on an interstate going 80mph with no helmet is a different rider than me. It all comes down to an individual's comfort level.

I've been riding motorcycles 43 years. I bought a Nolan full face 2 years ago when I bought my new Goldwing. The Nolan has a one latch safety system made of stainless steel. Other helmets require pressing 2 latches. Real pain when riding. The helmet has a sunshade that flips down. First MC full face I have owned and love it. Great in rain.

I have a Scorpion EXO700 in Matte Black. I love it, the fit is great, it is quiet, and the visor quick release is great for when I'm out and feel like going from my dark smoke visor to the "robocop" silver mirror(I'm all about the look to match my mood lol). It really can be changed in under 10 seconds while wearing the helmet.

My first helmet still is an AGV TiTech full-face helmet, gloss black, with iridium visor. I've worn it since May from my old Ninja EX250.
-At break-in, cheekpads pushed my cheeks in. Uncomfortable, like aunt Emily squeezing your cheeks when you were a little kid, "Oh how adorable!" But after a few months of wear, the tightness gave a bit, and the cheeks are not scruntched up as much.
-Noise from the wind is a little loud on the highway. A chief at the air terminal mentioned Arai was a quiet helmet. I'll probably invest in one later next year.
-Chatterbox GMRS X1 radio speakers do not fit comfortably inside an already snug-fit helmet. Before install, the space inside was just right and comfortable. After install, it was very difficult to squeeze my brain into the helmet. A work around would be to cut away some foam from the cheekpads and place the speakers in the gap to allow comfortable fit. Otherwise, I'll have to find a smaller speaker cable system, or sell the GMRS X1 to a sportbike rider.
-The cost for one helmet is above $550 unless you can find a wholesale dealer.
+find a wholesale dealer. The dealer shop, even with a 10% discount, charged too high for the same helmet sold on ebay.

I tried every helmet I could find on for fit and comfort. I ended up with a Shoei X-Eleven. I have a Ski-Doo modular for my snowmobile riding and like it a lot. For road riding, I wanted one with both DOT and Snell ratings. The X-Eleven is not inexpensive. I happened to get a great deal on a yellow which matches quite well. I figure my head is worth every dime I spend on a quality helmet. My friend bought his helmet on price only. You have to try things on and make your own choice, we are all different. Just purchase a quality name brand helmet. Scorpion get very good ratings for their pricing. Just my .02

When I picked up my Spyder last night I had to get a new helmet to replace the one that went along with my old bike. Really wanted a yellow one but the dealer had none in stock and I won't ride without one. Wound up getting an HJC Sy-Max per recommendations on this board. It is a modular one, great for eyeglasses, but also has the neat feature of a tinted shield that can be easily deployed and retracts with a smack of a button on the top of the helmet. Great for when the road turns into the sun and your prescription sunglasses are in the trunk. Love that feature

If you have a full face helmet and want to make an easy addition to fight the sun, get a Helmet Sunblocker. It is a 2" tinted strip that adheres to the inside top of your shield and with just a little forward tip of your head, it blocks the sun. Only about $16. Available lots of places, but I got mine at Competition Accessories.

I would be very suspicious of this helmet for a few reasons:
* This is the latest name for a helmet that has had several names over the last few years: Started off being called "Arrow". Then "Jarrow" then to Caberg and now to Daytona Eclipse. If you have an "Arrow", Jarrow" or "Caberg" you may not be able to take advantage of a warranty you may (or may not) have!!
* "You get what you pay for" is generally true! I saw this helmet online for $99.95! For a modular helmet, that is dirt cheap.

I also saw a couple of comments about this helmet. (here is one: My Webpage). The helmet has beem reported to be very light! Since it is made out of the same material most helmets are made of (I am assuming this), how does it get so light? Maybe using plastic connectors and locks .... leaving out padding (such as one report mentioned)?

Just my $ .02 worth!!!
