Spyders Ryde the Red Carpet: Transformers II Premier

by SpyderTalk staffers

BRP knows how to throw a party! Hundreds of Spyder enthusiasts from coast-to-coast enjoyed a once in a life-time treat-- to "ryde" to the Red Carpet of a Hollywood movie premier. Transformers II: REVENGE OF THE FALLEN is expected to be a blockbuster movie this summer--and it just so happens the Can-Am Spyder has a cameo. The BRP SpyderTeam thought that was reason enough to schedule their 2009 Spyder Owner's Event around the movie premier at Universal Studios in Universal City, California.

Spyders, Sunshine, Red Carpet, Hollywood...yeah, great idea!

After a great kick-off event on Friday night that was highlighted by Jay Leno's appearance at Bob's Big Boy, the official start to the 2009 Spyder Owner's event began with a gathering of Spyders at Universal CityWalk near Hollywood, California at 7:30am. Hundreds of Spyder owners gathered to register for the day's activities and made their way to the HardRock Cafe - Los Angeles for breakfast courtesy of BRP. The 2008 Spyder Owner's Event video was playing on a jumbotron and the Black Phantom Spyders from the movie were showcased outside the theater -- along with a giant transformer.

By 10am, we counted 155 Spyders parked outside Universal CityWalk and Spyder owners were enjoying the attractions and waiting for the presentations to start at 10:30. The emcee kicked things off with a roll call of attendees by state and province--and as expected, California won the contest as locals were out in force.

Yves LeDuc, Vice-President and General Manager, North American Sales & Marketing Can-Am and and Marc Lacroix, Spyder Marketing Director both spoke about the passion displayed by Spyder owners and promised that Spyder Owner's annual events will continue, with 2010's location to be determined. Mr. Lacroix presented awards for most miles (36,000+ miles took the prize), longest distance ridden to the owners event (over 3000 miles)--and the grand prize for best Custom Spyder in attendance. SpyderTalk staffers were honored that we were asked to help judge the "best custom" contest and the deserving winner, a nicely crafted Formula 1 look-a-like, took home a $1000 BRP gift certificate.

After the presentations, all attendees were invited to "walk the Red Carpet" for a special showing of Transformers II. BRP generously provided movie snacks and beverages, and a goodie bag for all in attendance. The Spyder's appearance in the movie would best be described as a cameo--but every time it rolled across the screen, the theater roared with applause and hoots and hollers from proud Spyder owners.

As fun as the day had been so far, the real fun was about to start with a ride out of Los Angeles and into Angeles National Forest. On this 95F degree day, the 5000 foot elevation of Angeles Crest Highway was enjoyed for both its wonderful scenery and its cooler temperatures. Keeping almost 200 Spyders together through LA traffic was not going to happen, but we regrouped near the halfway point--which also provided for a great photo opportunity.

The 80 mile ride (or 100 mile ride for the 25 of us that missed the turn down off the mountain) ended back in Burbank at PickWick Gardens for a great Bar-B-Que provided by BRP. Owners talked about the day's events and scenic ride--and chowed down on some good eats. A lucky Spyder owner from Seattle won a Garmin Zumo 550 GPS and BRP played event videos on a large screen in the background.

Although it would be impossible to duplicate the feel of last year's Homecoming Event, wrapping this year's Owner's Event around a movie premier featuring the Spyder was great fun. Spyders, Sunshine, Red Carpet, Hollywood--BRP set the bar high for 2010. We can't wait to see what they come up with for next year and we guarantee we'll be there.
