VSS Limp Home warning appeared with less than 25 miles on the odometer. Called my dealer (Twin Cities Motorsports in Roseville, Ca) and they had a service tech waiting for me when I 'limped' into the parking lot. He took it into the shop and came back with my baby within 15 minutes. He said the VSS Module came loose - he's seen it happen before. He reseated and reset it - and off I went.

Wow, mudpie, thanks for the post. I'm blown away by this. I'm assuming these are the newer Spyders? I have a 2008.

Now, on the other hand, this reminds me of cops, clinical psychologists, emergency room nurses, and prison guards: All day long they see mostly bad, emotionally disturbed, sick, and bad people, which of course can skew ones view of humanity on the days they do not see their clientele.

So I wonder (I'll post this for admin, too), if we have a survey of people who have not had issues relative to people who have.

Again, mud, thanks. Your perspective is very valuable.

22 out of 180 votes were for perfect spyders. The option is already in this pole but a new pole of troubled verses trouble free would be good also. This was not meant to make the spyders look bad, I created this pole way back when my very own spyder was suffering from multiple issues and reading on this forum about issues other were having. Having an 08 and the first spyder my dealer had sold made me and my spyder feel like a bit like a guinea pig. Strange things would happen and nobody knew why or how to fix it. This forum was a good place to compare and find answers. If folks are on this forum and have a spyder that have a few miles on it and it has been trouble free, please add your vote. I will say also that I have lots of miles on spyddy now and it appears to have gotten better with age. A couple months ago the check engine light came on and went off before I got the code out, so when the Pirate changed my power steering unit he checked it out and it was the computer unable to read the oxygen sensor for a few seconds triggered the check engine light, but everything was working fine when checked. I love my spyder and having someone working on it who knows what they are doing is a huge bonus. One last thing, you 22 that have had perfect spyders might want to buy a lottery ticket because your the lucky ones.

I have 2009 spyder, the noise issue with regard to brakes, belts etc. don't bother me since I always ride with ear plugs, not just on the spyder but on 2 wheelers as well. The dealers have taken care of recalls, the most recent being the replacement of the steering unit. That change made my spyder handle totaly different much much better than before. I've got about 2000miles on it. One issue that I had was intermittent failure icons on the instrument pannel read outs. It was the worst during the winter, cold weather. While checking the spyder over I noticed that the battery voltage when sitting for a few days was below the minimum. In checking further I found that the cable connection to the positive post on the battery was barely connected, the bolt holding the connection was floating in place.

It is amazing that the thing ran at all. The bad connection had killed the battery, it would not hold a charge. So I replaced the battery, fixed the connections and rerouted the band holding the battery in place. the spyder now runs smoothly, no more hesitation, no more warning icons, starts and idles much better.

The moral of the story is, check the simple things first, don't assume that the dealer checks everything that they are supposed too.

BTW, if only 4.3% (is that right?) report no problems, isn't that a problem?

Hi to all, first time posting.

Just a little background. I purchased a 2009 SE5 last October - new leftover. Just a few rides before putting it up for the winter. The brakes a little noisy when I first take it out but seems to quiet down after a few miles. Seems to run a little hot 4 - 5 bars before the fan kicks in. Living in N.Y. In the summer I will get to see how hot it runs. Love the handling and ride. Now for the bad. While sitting at a light when it is warmed the bike shuts down. Avss fault reads across the dash and the bike icon gwith squiggly lines lights up. It also has shifted to neutral by itself just prior at timesas well. To restart you have to turn off the ignition off, up to a few times till the bike fault icon goes out. I have seen posts on this happening to others. It is at the dealer for the 3rd time. They now say they are replacing the angle sensor once it comes in in another few days. It will now be 3 weeks that I have not had the spyder to ride this Friday.

I have finished up the trailer for the spyder and am leaving for a 900 mile trip the end of the month. If they do not have it corrected this Friday I will bring the spyder to the dealership I bought it from in PA next week. To speak about issues I will have to be able to ride it and put on some miles, just over 1000 on it now. Any recomendations for dealers in the NY metro area, not impressed so far with the one that I have used up to this point.

Sorry for the rambling but just getting frustrated.

The fan is not supposed to come on until 5 bars. It should take care of the heat issue. However, it sounds like you have another problem. Hopefully the dealer will find your problem. I assume you have had the DPS recall done and it worked properly.

4500 miles with nothing but a big :) . My brakes sqeal once in a while and I believe it is caused by glazed pads, Just hit them a little hard and it goes away for a few hundred miles. Not really a prolem at all , just tells me that the spyder has more than enough brake than what it needs. And if I'm going to have a brake problem thats really the one I want to have!!Just hit them hard and break the glaze once in a while. Love the bike and have owned alot of bikes but this one is my favorite|!!!!!! :D :D :D

The dealers are great. It's their mechanics and lack of real shop supervisors that are the problems. And where did you get the idea that everyone that has purchased a Spyder knows how to check and fix things?

It's hidden away on the lower LH side of the Spyder. If you buy one of those special hand parking brake levers from that fellow in Mexico City your problems will solved. <xe1ll@prodigy.net.mx>, Mexico City

Just and update from Chrison3 to my earlier post. I mentioned an issue which caused stalling - do a search and you will see the issue. I had to have the clutch replaced about a month ago in addition to the stalling issue. Add to the list the fire issue as well it started on fire on 9/1/11 and I believe it is a total loss. I guess this would fall under the other category since there is nothing listed as a fire section.

Only big issue I have with mine is severe "over-heating" during hot-weather riding. Hubby thinks it has to do with my after-market Hindle Exhaust and thinks that an Oxygen Sensor will solve the problem. It NEVER happens during cool or cold weather riding and we ride for long hours at a time. It only happens during warm and/or sunny weather. The signals on my instrument panel go absolute berserk and flash and blink and the over-heating symbol comes on. We've asked numerous Can-Am dealers about this problem and no one seems to be able to figure it out. The O2 Sensor will be our last resort before I try going back to the OEM exhaust. It worries me on long rides during warm weather because all the lights and symbols on my panel go crazy and start blinking and it won't show what gear or speed I'm in and looks like the bike is over-heating. So I have to stop and remove the key and let it "rest" awhile, assuming it needs to "cool-down." That usually works, but it's getting very annoying and worrisome and I'm worried that something will happen and it will leave me sit somewhere on a long ride. I tell hubby that it makes me think the engine is going to blow up when it goes berserk like that. *LOL* We think it's odd that it only happens in WARM/HOT temperatures.

We're going to try the O2 Sensor and see if that helps. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

You should include over heating, pumping of the brakes, and heat on your feet in your inquest. Arthur---Mexico City

This poll is to get an idea of what issues spyder owners are experiencing and how many of us are experiencing them. Thank you for taking this poll.*******44 votes were already taken when the parking break issue was added.

My problem was that it caught on fire and burned and was a total loss back on 9/1/11. This Spyder was one of the ones that caughton fire. This Spyder was a 2009 RS se5. I have since replaced it with a 2011 RSS also se5. Short of a long story which has had at least one positive outcome so far. I survived it with nothing more than loss of my Spyder. My 2011 so far with 1800 miles on it so far no issues. My problem stemmed from an electrical stalling issue that became way too involved to discuss here. I am awaiting outcome from a jury of m peers. I will offer this suggestion to any who or have persistent issues is to document it all as it progresses there is no such thing as too much detail!!!!!!

Picked mine up on March 3, 2012. Have already had the 600 mile service, and the odometer is heading into the 1500 range! After a recent cleaning, I noticed the brake reservoir caps had leaked, and appeared loose. I thought the tech might have overlooked them. Now I see it listed here, so perhaps it has been an issue?
I do have to say that other than that, which I consider minor, it has been a trouble-free machine.

Okay, one other item. The Parking Brake toggle has the 'Frunk' opener button on the other side. Mine does not seem to want to open the frunk when the bike is running, only the key will open it. Is this an issue anyone else has had, or am I doing it wrong and need to look in the manual again?

Anyway, love the Spyder, just need better weather!!
Happy Ryding!
