We have a 2010 RT, and July of 2010 we took a trip thru Ok,NM, Az,Tx and my RT did run hot, in fact we could ride during evening hours due to the fact heat rising and my passenger was really unconfortable. We were in Scottsdale AZ for a couple of days, had it serviced and the shop foremen asked if it overheated during our trip. I said no, but, it temp gauge was on the red line. And yes my butt and right leg were extremely hot. That is why we rode at night. We live in South Dakota, so don't have the severe heat, and while riding around the Midwest, my temp is usually on the half way mark. Yes in traffic it runs hotter, but, to date no limp mode. I do believe the engine is tuned so drastically for emissions that not much can be done. Maybe a larger radiator, and more effiecient fan, or a cooler thermostat.

I was parked at my daughters house in Pembroke GA and it was really hot that day, just sitting in the sun, not running, not riding, when I cranked her up to ride, the 'check engine' light came on, once I started moving, it was fine.

I installed a sort of fan bypass switch on my Spyder SE5 after it over heated and ruptured the coolant expansion tank instead of leaving the water "bubble" out. The radiator cap didn't release the pressure (open) as it should have. Now when I first get into that very heavy traffic here in Mexico City I click on the fan before hand. Also when I am stopped I click off the motor with the red thumb switch shutting down the motor and I then turn the fan on to cool things down when actually stopped in the traffic. It cools off the radiator so that when I have to move again I start the motor and the cooler radiator water circulates to the motor and the motor's temperature cools down a few degrees. It keeps me going and that's what counts. There is a larger capacity fan that can be installed that's made in Italy by the same maker of the OEM fan. There is also room in front of the radiator for installing another almost identical fan as the OEM but this one has to be a pusher, not a sucker like the OEM fan. There's a little bit of electrical work to be done. It is a tedious fix but it works. If anyone wants more information on how I did all this drop me a letter with your complete mane and address and I'll return you a schematic on the electrical part and look up the U.S. supplier of the OEM fans. No money is involed. Arthur---Mexico City. <xe1ll@prodigy.net.mx>

I have had my Spyder in and out of the shop for the past month and it caused me not to be able to attend the Homecoming. I brought it back in today to the shop after a ten mile drive (for the fourth time) bubbled out all the coolant when I shut the Spyder off. I am hoping this time will be the last. I was told it the past that I had a bad fan and relay but now I to can't even sit on the Spyder after just a few minutes without the screws on the left hand side feel like they will burn thought my pants.
PS... I still love my Spyder!!! I knew this thing would be a hot motorcycle but not like this...hahahaha

I just wrote a long article on how I solved the motor over heating problem on my GS SE5 and it didn't show up on the page. What gives? <xe1ll@prodigy.net.mx>

Yes,
But my over heating problem is only when the Spyder is not moving
in traffic or Idling when it is hot out side and has gotten worse because
of increase in summer temperatures . I do not have a heating issue when
it is moving normally usually 3 to 4 bar on average.
It is also getting very uncomfortable to sit on when its this hot sitting
still because the heat comes though the upper vents by the seat .

This has all been good info. Almost like reading about the same problems encountered with Harley. Im wondering if the Spyder has the same heat level as Harley. And does anybody know what the actual temp is when stating overheating.
Does the Spyder have an oil cooler on it? If not, could one be added? This could help keep temps down.

My 2008 SE5 got so hot that it went into the limp mode. But I couldn't stop being on an extremely congested freeway. When I did stop the heat was so intense that the coolant boiled and ruptured the coolant expansion tank. The radiator cap didn't release the excess presure. Not one car in all that congestion got over heated. The Spyder's radiator is not sufficient. There is a larger fan available. I installed a by pass switch so that I could turn on the fan whenever I am stopped in trafic with the motor turned off. That helps me greatly when I'm stuck in Mexico City traffic. <xe1ll@prodigy.net.mx> Arthur---Mexico City

Perhaps there should be a catagory for those that have actually had the Spyder overheat... as in... gone into limp mode because of it.
