today i was working on our bike and needed to remove the fuel tank and pump/sensor (another new project) and decided i would answer the question once and for all about the tank size. i completely drained the tank and then took it down to the gas station. with all of the internals, vents, etc. in place (just like on the bike) i could put in 6.775 gallons (this was bringing the fuel level to the very bottom edge of the fill hole).
i then brought it back to the shop and started draining the tank (i was doing some other calibrations). i did find that when the guage reads no bars that there is still ~3/4 gallon left and that you will maintain pump pressure down to basically sucking the bottom of the tank dry (couple ounces left).
i hope this p.s.a. has been helpful

Using the number of 6.775 from Ken would imply that the 6.6 number in the Owners Manual is relatively close. ;)

That sounds about right. I went another 20 miles when the last bar disappeared before it stopped dead.

I went 10 miles after the black bar disappeared, then put in 5.4 gallons...so I had another 1.2 gallons left to go? Which would equate to about a total of 40 miles after the bar disappears.

Just wondering, as others have voiced a desire ofr a larger tank, is there enough room for one? Could someone fabricate a larger tank to fit in place, or is it pretty crammed in there already?

oh, it's pretty tight. it is quite a pain just to remove the tank because of the way it fits around the frame.

There is 4.78 gallons gone when the light comes on. So at highway 30 mpg, you can make it 59.85 miles until she is a bunch of rubber, plastic and metal on the side of the road. I have noticed it has 1/2 bars?
