Made a flat bar from 1/8 aluminum and 3 little Z clamps from 1/16 aluminum. Atatched it to the handlebar with two 1 3/8 x 2 U bolts. (made the Z clamps because I didn't want to rely only on the suction cup) Had everything powder coated along with a backrest I made. Cost .... 2 u bolts @ $1.40 ea. , aluminum (I already had) , powder coating = a case of beer.
inexpensive but effective gps mount gps

just waiting for the upholsterer to do the unit.... will post during assembly. Had it powder coated silver... looked great, but, showed up my poor welding. Sand blasted unit , rewelded it and had it powder coated black.
looks ok but silver was a little nicer.

Ok, so all this reminds me of the space pen joke. It goes like this: NASA spent millions of dollars inventing a pen that would work in zero gravity so that astronauts would have something to write with in space. The russians, they took a pencil! Ba doom crash, I'm here all week, try the veal.
My point is, I just suction cupped my Nuvi to the speedometer side of the instrument cluster. for safety, I ran the power cord under the wind screen and into the trunk and plugged it into the power outlet. That way, if for some reason the suction cup came off, I would not lose the gps.
With the gps suctioned on the right side, I was able to still see speed via the digital readout and there was no clearance issue with the steering. The left side is no good because the clutch fluid reservior can hit the gps on that side when turning sharply. I rode 120 miles with it on there and had no issue at all. I like that it is protected from the wind as well.
Best part? ZERO money spent! Use the pencil people, use the pencil.

I miss-wrote. I suction cupped on the right side over the TACH. Who needs a tach anyway
No, I didn't try the windshield. I doubt that would work.
