Why would you want to use a Mobil One oil that doesn't meet manufacturer's specs and costs $5+ per quart when you can use Shell Rotella T Synthetic which DOES meet manufacturer's specs and costs only about $15 per gallon at your local Wal-Mart?

If I did the math correctly, you can buy four quarts of Shell Rotella T Synthetic for the cost of three quarts of Mobil One.

Mobil One and Amsoil "motorcycle" oils cost much more than Shell Rotella T Synthetic and provide no added benefit.

Regards,

Mark

Hi Mark. Mobil 1 does meet spes but not the viscousity. People hae been useing different viscousity oils sinse time began. I don't think it bad to put 10w40 over 5w40. One thread mentioned diesel Mobil 1 5w40 so I looked it up and yes it is an SL, SJ rated oil. The Shell Rotella synthetic would be great if I could find it. Only the regular stuff on our shelves here in Canada and when I was in Florida as well. Don't like BRP because it's supposed to be made by Castrol and all BRP stuff is high in price as well.

Oh one last thing. When I started riding bikes Triumph's - BSA's etc. We used straight 50w. Then when they came out with 20w/50 oil been using it ever since; 38 bikes later so far not a oil related problem.with any of them. Still run 20w/50 in the BMW & Virago.

Yes, I can remember using 20w50 oil as well. The only reason I changed was because of an article were they measured oil temps on the same bike same day with both 20/50 and 10/40 oil. They found the 10w40 ran cooler by 35 degrees. Plain bearings were to blame as I remember the article sayingthe 20w took longer to pass and the fricton created heat. Now this might also be true with 5w and 10w oils but I prefer the 10w for the gearbox.

You can also get Shell Rotella T syn. at Farm & Fleet stores, if you have any of them close to you.
