I decided not to remove the trunk because Ken at Evoluzione agreed to send me a longer upper cable (at no charge) which should solve my problem. By the way I noticed what I thought was a ground post on the frame in the general area where the relay should be installed. I'll give a final report when the new longer cable is installed.
The 24 inch upper cable solved the problem thanks to Ken at Evoluzione. I salvaged the outer cable cover from the original 18 inch upper cable and used it to cover the cable that leads to the boot that goes across a rather sharp frame member. Everything works fine now. The extra length on the upper cable also made it easier for me to crimp on the connector. Now I won't worry about what those wires are doing when I do the spurt to 60 in 4.5 seconds.
