Subject: Fw: Burnt bike
My CanAm 2008 Spyder Roadster, caught fire Friday 12/16/2011 on way back from Greenville.
Stopped off side of road to take a break, almost immediately smelled
something hot, then saw smoke comming from under cowling, tried to use fire
extinguisher, couldn't get to anything, everything covered with planels. It
busted into flames, i tried to remove as much as i could. I had just picked
up some very expensive Nikon lens in Greenville, these where in the front, under the hood. I burned my right hand trying to get the ignition key to release the front hood, it wouldn't open. I tried the fire extinguisher again, really didn't help very much( the stream coming out of the extinguisher was wimpy), the thought of those brand new lens burning up just sent me to the front and i pulled and jerked the locked hood open and was able to save the lens. Lost the radar detector and GPS. It could have happened in a much different way, just glad i wasn't hurt more. (I just had it back from 14k service, something wasn't right,?)
Some of the Spyder forum sites (Spydertalk.com and Spyderryder.com)
talk and show pictures of 4 or 5 Spyders burned up in the last couple
months. There was no current "recall" or "service calls"etc., from BRP
according to the service dept. a few weeks back in Gainesville when i had it serviced.
I would like to someday (maybe) own one again, only after they narrow the problem to certain models, or years, and have isolated and fixed the
problem.
I feel like i have lost an old friend, but am so thankful that God urdged me to stop when i did.

I'm sorry for your loss and glad that you didn't suffer serious injury. You may want to contact the NHTSA and report the fire as they keep a data base on vehicle problems.

That is not the way to start christmas season. I am sorry for your loss and am glad you were stopped. I have read a post some time back that the author removed the charcoal canister right after he bought his. I have always been curious as to the several spyder fires that have been reported.
I ride daily and there are times it smells hot when I get off. Please keep us posted in the event you are able to figure out what happened.

Glad you didn't get hurt. This has happened way too many times, check Spyderlovers.com By all means, as someone mentioned before, contact the NHTSA and report it. BRP sweeps this problem under the rug as soon as it happens. I've owned my '08 RS since July 08. Mine was the first one sold at the dealer, I ordered it in April 08. They were not in stock back then. Being in FL, I ride all year round. I've had my share of problems and then some.
Found all the crappy dealers and had a problem that required Carlo's involvement to solve.
I still love my ride but sometimes it's just like a wife, it gets under my skin. Hope to have you back in the Spyder family someday. Merry Christmas!
