Hoping someone has found a cure.? Know this is a problem some Spyder owners have.. After getting the tall windshield..and those funky fenders..the ride has been miserable.. It sets my legs and feet on fire even after a short ride.. Once I had to stop and pour my drinking water on my jeans because I feared they'd spontaneously combust.. Not a pretty picture seeing an older lady going down the highway with flaming jeans.. LOL! I wanted to get the new RT model but now I hear the vents blow the same so will it get hot too.? Open to any ideas.. We've even discussed cutting vents in the windshield itself like the Gold Wings.. Any help will be much appreciated.. Thanks.

Have you considered muffler tape? When I rode my wife's spyder, I noticed extreme heat coming from the side panel. I saw that wrapping the exhaust would help eliminate that. Just a thought. She has an 08 SM5

I posted this yesterday on another thread but try here: http://www.spyderpops.com/
Look at the heat management system. It's getting good reviews on the other forum.

Could be the exhaust y gaskets have blown.

Thanks for the link.. Will see if the mechanic can understand how these work and can
install them.. I don't remember having this problem until I added the taller windshield.
Those deflector fins BRP sends should be remodeled to fit lower to force the hot air
away from the foot.. They are useless where they are now.. It's just a poor design altogether,
in my honest opinion.. I should dig out the small windshield and send the other back.. I'd
rather use my helmet with the face shield to avoid debris away from my face than heat up
my legs.. The ride is just too painful.. IF the RT does the same thing.. I'll be SO depressed..
Wanted all the comforts of a touring model..but not the flaming legs and feet.. Thanks again.....

I don't know.. I just got my Spyder back a few days ago.. Had the steering fixed..
so they had to have combed the entire bike to make sure everything was working properly
They just have no clue what to do with the heat problem.. The way it's going
now..I'd rather have my Kawasaki 900 back.. It was much cooler to ride.. Except for the
weight it was an enjoyable bike..

No the RT is not the same as the RS model as far as heat. I used high perfomance header wrap on the left hand pipe only to keep the blisters off my left leg on the RS. It always ran hot except in cool weather before and after that little project. I now have an RT and it runs fairly cool in even the hottest weather. Now if you take your legs and splay them out off of the trike body like many people seem to like to do your right leg will feel like a meat loaf in a very short time. Solution to me was simple do't act like you are driving an easy chair and keep your legs against the bodywork! I have not wrapped any of the headers (exhaust pipes under the bodywork) on the RT because for me there seems no need to do that. I have too many issues with the way the RT doesn't handle to even think about other things right now. I think a lot of the people with heat issues on RT's should address bodywork fitting and things like insulation in the areas of seams in construction before they start ducting and wrapping headers and such. That is great news to me.. I had advertised my Spyder on a local Craigs list but after the ad ran out I didn't renew.. Figured I would wait to see what reviews the RT had first.. Handling problem you say.?? How so, if you don't mind me asking.? My steering was locking up..as I've noticed a few others have the same problem.. but now it is great.. Is the RT steering an issue as well.? I hope we can figure out a way to redirect the fan on the right side but not wrap anything as I'm worried something will overheat.. I could always wear an ice pack on my right foot...as well as emergency ice for my legs... LOL! Anyway.. Maybe the 2011 RT's will have all the problems ironed out before I make my next purchase.. Thanks a lot.. You all have been a great help..

I had the same problem with my 2010 RS-S - my legs were on fire :flame:! It was like an inferno, especially at lower speeds.

I got the entire modification kit from SpyderPops.com:goodmod:, which solved the problem! It made a world of difference to add on the heat shield, air dam and air management system (the most important part). It's totally normal now - all the hot air blows out the side instead of back. It was NOT easy to put on - it's not a "plug-n-play":hairout: - so I had my dealer install it for $70 while they were doing the 600 mile service. The air management system requires a rivet gun, and you have to take the whole side of the bike off to install it. They're tricky, but definitely worth putting on the bike!

I'd highly recommend SpyderPops "missing" kits to resolve your heat issue! :D

Are you aware that there is a recall for the steering on the RS models? :o It's a free fix at the dealer and it makes a difference! :riding:
