I don't know if this has been discussed already but I'm trying to find out what make the bike backfire. I had the Hindle muffler put on by the dealer and it seems the hotter the bike gets the more it backfires. I spoke to the dealer about it and they said it was not something to worry about and it wouldn't hurt the bike. I have to bring the bike in for its 600 mile check up, and if there is something I should bring to their attention any info would be a help. The site is amazing and everyone seems so helpful I thought I would start here. Thanks in advance.

Could be and air leak between the Hindle and the forward part of the exhaust system. Many owners have had trouble getting that connection tight. Your bike should not backfire regardless of what the dealer says.

Also check for leaks at the y gaskets. Take the bottom side panels off and quickly start and check for leaks with your hand around the pipe be quick they get hot fast. Many people have changed those with the Honda replacements. Do a search on here or Spyderlovers page.

Is this something I can ask the dealer to look into, I get a little shakey taking the bike about, or is this a fairly easy fix if there is a leak. Should I push for the dealer to take care of since they put the hindle muffler on.

If the dealer put it on I would ask them to check it--absolutely!

I went thought the same drill. If the back backfires with an aftermarket exhaust as you decelerate it can be tied to a leak as mentioned by the others but it can also be caused by a "perfect" unspent fuel and air mixture in your exhaust stream. Mine was the latter, then it got far worse when I added the a high flow air filter and dual exhaust. The way I ended up curing it was the Juice Box. With just the Hindle I cured it with the O2 sensor modification sold by evolution. The bike runs real lean with aftermarket exhaust, even the hindle. to check for leaks light a cigarette or something like that and let the smoke drift up the where the pipe connects to the motor under the bike and see if the smoke drifts. If not call evolution and talk to them.
good luck

You need update #2 with the Hindle. It'll solve your problems. Does the bike sputter at all at lower rpm?

I also have the Hindle on my 2009 and it backfires on automatic downshifts but not really bad. I think it is just the nature of the Hindle.

What juice box did you use? I don't have a o2 sensor on my Hindle.

My wifes spyder came with the Hindle. Have to agree that it is the pipe. It breaths much more than the stock pipe and causes a lean problem. Hers would backfire, also spit and sputtered at cruising speed, acted like it had a flat spot at certain RPM's. We didn't want to go the power commander way to adjust for the pipe so I purchased a stock pipe. I replaced the pipe last week and what a difference. No more backfires and never missed a beat! My wife was very impressed with how the bike runs now and the loudness of her hindle bordered being obnoxious for both her and other riders if they happened to be behind her. It was basically just a choice, a power commander of some sort, live with the backfires and missing, or go back to stock that we opted for and are happy with. Hope this experience helps.

My experience exactly, you couldn't have said it better. I had loud pops on downshifts and wife did not enjoy sitting on back (she always on my back). I switched back to stock exhaust and now bike runs smoother and downshifts much more quietly. I never had sputtering or any issues at cruising speed.

Here is a little test to try get up to 5th gear then let the bike slow down by its self ( if you have an se5) so it down shifts by its self and see if it back fires. Then do the samething this time you down shift it and see if it back fires. I have found that it did it when i was at high rpms and trying to down shift to fast. IMHO the 02 modifier, all it does is tell the bike that everything is ok so when their is something wrong how will the bike know when you are cheating the system with it. I have one that I'am willing to sell. Oh by the way if anybody is going to get the juice box pro you will have to put the 02 sensor back in ask me how i know. Yes i do like the jb pro i have it on the third setting and i like it and no backfire with the 02 sensor in.
