Why use a heavier 10w40 synthetic when the manual calls for 5w40??
+Tribo-chemical shearback, mixability of AMSOIL pure synthetic viscosities, flow rate of pure synthetic oils, etc...
Ride on.

Oh man... I just started this path.. Now I am even more confused!!! There is only one oil that meets the BRP specs? But hardly anyone is using it?
What to use? I am so confused!!!!!!! (RT-S owner)
Well i think you just answered your question, use the oil which meets BRP specs.

That is what I had originally planned.. But according to info in this thread even BRP's does not meet these requirements... sigh

Use whatever you trust and feel comfortable using. I use AMSOIL 10w-40 pure synthetic motorcycle oil because I can trust it to stand up to the heat. Today here 40 miles north east of Atlanta I recorded 112 degrees passing through Loganville, GA. If you want to use it... email me at krb1945@yahoo.com. Ken krb1945

It's time for my next oil change and all this talk about different oils has left me not knowing which oil I should use. The two I am considering is Mobile 4T and BRP XPS, what else should I consider.
Try Shell Rotella T, Full Synthetic, 5W40. Check the label and you will see that it conforms to JASO-MA (this is a recent change, some older containers may not shop this), which means that it will NOT mess up your wet clutch. I used this same oil in the wet clutch in my Suzuki Burgman 650 Executive and, after 3.5 years, I had 108,198 miles on the bike and the engine and clutch ran like new.

Just to add more options. In my Aprilia Tuono (Rotax 990) I use Agip Racing 4T which is a 10w-60. It is API SG and JASO MA rated. I use Mobile 1 MX 4T (10w-40) in the Kawasaki Concours but I might switch over to the Agip due to the greater range overage.

BE CAREFUL and read the label with the Shell Rotella Synthetic at Walmart...They have changed the formula on the 10W40 and it is now SM rated which is NOT good for the Spyder wet clutch. Be sure that it is SL rated.
You obviously can't go wrong with the OEM oil. Myself, I use Castrol Power RS Racing 4T Synthetic oil which is available for around $9 a quart. I bought it on sale, and got it with a case discount for $7.65 a quart.
As others have said, AMSOIL is also a good choice.
I must agree that AMSOIL is a good choice IF YOU LIKE TO THROW YOUR MONEY AWAY!
Shell Rotella T6, 5W40, is a full synthetic oil AND it is JASO MA certified. According to the Shell tech that returned my email, the "new" Rotella is new in name only; it is the exact same formula as before the SM and JASO ratings were added. All Shell has done is submit samples for SM certification and for JASO certification and change the label. It is a fact that MOST any full synthetic motor oil over 30 weight does NOT have friction modifiers.
I put 108,198 miles on an '06 Burgman Executive (wet clutch) using Shell Rotella full synthetic with no problem. I now (23 August 2010) have 25,021 miles on my 2010 Can-Am Spyder RT-S, SE5 and have used shell Rotella T6 since the 4,000 mile mark with no problem.
By the way, if you check the fine print on the Rotella label and the fine print on the BRP (summer grade) oil label you will see that they are made by the same company! When you check you will see "Distributed by SOPUS, Houston, TX..." SOPUS is an acronym for "Shell Oil Products U.S."
Shell Rotella T6, 5W40, is available at your local Wal-Mart for about $19.00 per gallon. You might as well get 2 since you will need about 4.4. quarts for an oil change. Just make sure that they give you the left over for the next oil change.
Oh, yeah. Pennsoil and Quaker State are also made by Shell. Shell is taking the Pennsoil and Quaker State heavy duty synthetic grades off the market because they are the same as the Rotella T6.

I choose to "waste my money". However if I ever decide to switch to a Burgman, I'll certainly take your advice under consideration.

+I don't consider engine longevity, performance and mileage increases a waste.
AMSOIL is the better of anything BillG referenced.
Ride on.

If you ask 10 people which oil is best, you will get at least 11 answers since at least one will change his mind. There is no "best". Only experience, good and bad. I used premium oil in my Explorer and still had premature failure @ 107000 mi.
I have yet to reach the next oil change, but at 6000 mi I will do my own using AMSOIL. Having done my due diligence, I believe this is the best choice for me at this time. Just my opinion.
No, wait.... maybe I should use Shell Rotella.... or the BRP brand.....
Great, now I'm back to indecision.

If you really read my post you would have seen that I am using Shell Rotella T6 in my Spyder RT-S and I have put on over 25,000 miles in less than 6 months (176 days). That is an average of 143 miles per day since the day I bought her (or a continuous 5.96 mph 24 hours a day, 7 days a week since I bought her). I think that speaks for the quality of Rotella oil. I would not be surprised to find that AMSOIL is made by SOPUS (Shell Oil Products U.S.).

THANK YOU!
That was one of the sources that I used when I was researching motor oils. Although it is a little dated (he mentions that Shell Rotella synthetic is available at Wal-Mart for $13.00 a gallon, in my neck of the woods it is now $19.00 a gallon) the information still holds. I do not believe that there is a better oil than Rotella T6 (the new label) at any price. IMHO.

I could care less what you use in your spyder nor do I care how many miles you ride..However, it hits a nerve when you tell me and others using Amsoil(apparently, there are plenty) that we am wasting our money.

I apologize that I hit a nerve. I have nothing against AMSOIL. It is a fine product and I am aware that many riders use AMSOIL, probably because for a long time it truly was the best oil on the market for bikes, at any price, and those who have been using it are happy with its performance. The AMSOIL guarantee is still unbeatable, too.
I am the type of person that likes to look around for the best "bang for my buck" and I feel that Shell Rotella T6 is that FOR ME. Sure, I encourage others to use it in their bikes but, then, anyone who is happy with any product would try to encourage others to use that product.
I must admit that "throwing away your money" was a particularly bad choice of words. Again, my apologies.

Your apology is accepted. I'm sure the Shell T6 that you use is just fine as are many other choices. As some have posted, there are there are almost as many opinions as there are choices. See you in Gatlinburg.

Rotella T Synthetic is perfectly acceptable for wet clutches. It carries JASO MA, the specific test and certification for wet clutch application. Even the plain vanilla 15w40 Rotella is very robust, and also carries JASO MA. No clutch worries. Castrol? Blechhhh... BP Owned. No sense in going there.

I am new to changing my own oil and motorcycles so I am confused. A local store has amsoil 10w40 synthetic oil but is not the kind that has motorcycle on the label. It says wet clutch on the back label. Is this safe to use in my spyder or not? Thank you in advance for your replies. I am trying to find an oil to use that will not cost me $20+ just for shipping. The dealership charged $150 for my first oil change since I bought it used and can't pay that every three months or less.

Here's what you want: http://www.amsoil.co...efront/mcf.aspx
You might look for a local distributor on the Amsoil site. That's what I did. Or you can even sign up yourself.
