There you are finishing your furthest road trip on the new RTS with automatic SE5 clutch or so you though. You pull into the gas station and after you engage the electronic parking brake, you turn the roadster off for its first refueling. After filling up you turn the key, hit the mode button and press the start button ... nothing. You quickly look at the display and notice that it's in 1 gear. Opps how that happen? Ok you then click the automatic down shift. Nothing, try it again and again still in 1st. Oh no, now what? Then you remember the section in the owner’s manual that mentioned how you can "manually" change the gears on an SE5. After flipping through the manual you find the section that explains how to do this. After stumbling with the # 13 wrench you down shift it to neutral. Magic the bike starts. Your off . The next day you’re coming home and after you come to a stop the automatic transmission shifts down to the 1st gear. The engine stalls. Guess what … Repeat steps above, except now your stuck at an intersection. Anyone have the joy of this experience yet??? Any advise?

Besides making sure it's in neutral before I turn it off, the second time this happend the engine just stalled. What am I missing?

I doubt you are missing anything, as far as the stalling. If the problem persists, see your dealer. Bad centrifugal clutch is one possible cause. As far as mistakenly shutting it off in neutral, you should be able to step on the brake and get it to release. If it sticks in gear before you shut it off, you have other problems. Dealer time again.

Thanks. Will try the brake thing if this happens again. If not I will see the dealer.

On my RT-S if you have the parking brake engaged, if in neutral, it will start without applying the foot brake. If it was left in first gear, then you need to apply the foot brake, RT will start and then shift into neutral. Hope this helps. :)

Also the last statement in the section about using the wrench to change gears states :

Quote

NOTE: SE5 model will not start in gear without brake pedal depressed.

As for shifting the SE5 from reverse or first gear, the shifting paddle can be a bit touchy, it only requires a quick tap to change to neutral. :)

I have had some 'fun' with my GS. I have had it stay in 1st gear when I turn it on and so far the cure is to reset the relays (not sure which one it is, so I just pull them all and put them back in). Another thing to check is the shift arm on the engine. There is a small linkage arm, located on the left side of the engine, right about where a foot shifter would be. The splined part of mine, slipped off the shaft coming out of the engine - of course then the engine would shift but there was no communication to the transmission - that was fun as I was in 5th gear on PCH - stoplights became ... challenging. Prior to it actually coming completely off, I was having lots of strange shifting issues, due I think to a strange angle on the shifting arm.

I would check relays first, then the physical connection to the transmission shaft. And definitely get it to the dealer! This is not normal behavior for your SE5. There may also be an issue with the GPS (gear position sensor).

Totally normal. Unless the RT is different, bike won't start in gear without your foot on the brake

Maybe I'm not reading this right, but to start it (in gear or not)you turn on the switch, wait until you see the safety message, then hit the mode button, push on the brake and hit the starter, works every time!

Yup, gotta put your foot on the brake on the SE5 models to start it, that was the way it was on the GS, I imagine it's the same on the RT. I hope you figure it out and you don't actually have a problem.

I would suggest taking it to your dealer, this problem should not be happening. Verify your tech has the latest version of the BUDDS software for the RT. :)

I had the same problem. One recurring problem with the Spyder is that the relays can work loose. Reseat your relay...should solve the problem. Then get some foam to place inside the cover of the fuse box so it doesn't happen again.
