Everyone get the original BRP key for the spyder and it doesn't have hole for you to put it in the ring. I am not sold on the holster that you put your key in it because I lost one of mine already but thank god I didn't lose the key..

So I was wondering what you have done to your key? Did you drill the hole or did you just make a copy and keep your original key at home? Please feel free to attach pics as we love pics! :D

You did receive two keys with your Spyder right ?

Some have had success in drilling a hole in the Spyder key, personally I don't recommend it since there is a computer chip in that area, you damage the chip. :TgC_emoticon142:

yes, two keys.. and seriously chip in it?? Interesting! I saw on other forum a guy made small leather plates and cover the holder part with it. Let me link the pic to it. It was just something I glanced and wondered about it.

pic link (Forget the GPS and all other stuff but look at his key. :D

They Spyder has a D.E S S. system (Digitally Encoded Security System), a Spyder key will fit in any Spyder ignition, but only the correctly encoded key will actually activate the ignition system. :)

I put the key in the supplied holster and clip to a lanyard that I wear around my neck. I have never had a problem. :beerchug1:

If you damage the key by drilling it get your check book out because the replacement is about 125 - 150 dollars :wall:

Yea, but as I said, I am not sold by the holster... and I am not big on laynard or using the hook. I prefer to put keys in the pocket but I am annoyed by looking for single key (spyder) when I got all other keys on my keyring in same pocket. I keep keys and coins in one pocket and wallet/cash (clip-on on wallet) in other pocket and receipts in back pockets.

Looking for something that can hold spyder and house key so I can leave the other keys at home.

I go along with Ken on this, when I leave my house on the Spyder, only key I need is the Spyder key, especially when I leave the state. Spyder key sheath is in pocket, key goes in pocket, have never lost a key in 50 years. :riding:

I am a responsible person and don't lose things easily until couple of years ago I lost my keys because I had many keys (like maintenance guy with all hundred keys on it) for my campground business and the jean I was wearing is worn out. The belt holder was holding the key with hook on it broke off and I lost the key. I couldnt get into my house and all the access I had to my campground had to be replaced! :( Expensive lesson for me so I changed the system and carry less keys with me.. house key, truck key, and key to key cabinets holding all the campground access.

I guess it will have to be just the house key on ringkey and spyder as single one from now on..

Thanks for the input!

Talked to my dealer today and asked him the question. He told me that at the top of the key shaft is a hole in the metal. You can't see it because it is covered by a small lip of plastic. He said that you can take a exacto or hot ice pick and open that and you can add a ring but it is in the middle of the key and is weird but will work. He did confirm drilling up in the triangular area above will probably mess up the electronics unless you have x-ray vision and can find the spot not covered by the electronics.

When I get a key I'll post a photo. Or if someone posts a photo I'll stick an arrow on the spot he mentioned.

From Arthur---Mexico City
Key: I drilled a little 3/32" hole close to the upper part of the key, being careful not to invade the electronic part of the key, for a ring to hold my side saddle and Corbin seat keys. Worked out well. I can hook on my belt key holder or use the original plastic holder.

Point of interest. The air cleaner used in my 21008 Spy is the identical air cleaner used in Chrysler K Darts and the Phantoms. Down here they cost $2.00 dollars. Low cost solution.

From Arthur---Mexico City,
My Spy has been giving me a fit going into the Limp Mode now 4 times for no apparent reason. thge Spy mechanic with his trusty laptop and that BUDS modulecould not fix it at my home so it was carted away. the mechanic told me that the key should not be left in it when not being uesd, that it should be removed and kept at least 32" away from the Spy. He said that leaving the key in the Spy runs down the battery. Is this BS or not?

Made this reply on the other post asking this, will post here in case you missed it. :)

They could be referring to the D.E.S.S (digitally encoded security system) system on the Spyder. The key has a micro chip in it which the Spyder computer recognizes, allowing the Spyer to start.
A Spyder key will fit in the ignition of any Spyder, but only the correct key will start the Spyder.

I suppose after a long enough time the key in the ignition could drain the battery down enough that the Spyder would not start. But personally I find that theory rather hard to believe. :)

Also BMW motorcycles have a chip. If the key is left in for a long time without being used, the bike will crank over but won't start. Take key out for a few minutes then it will start. This does happen sometimes, but not too often.

Ken, that leather trick looks interesting. Yo could do that with about 2 " worth of an old leather belt. Its just folded over and held together with some rivets that are standard with leather key holders. I may try to put one of these together this weekend. I too would much rather have it on a ring with my other keys -- maybe I'd be les likeley to forget it and walk off with the key still in the Spyder.

Thats BS about the key draining battery. The system works when the key is turned to on. The it reads the key code and only then. I had broken 2 keys over loading my trunk. after having to buy new ones and having them matched to bike I did it again. this time I bought blanks and had them cut at locsmith and took top of old key and mounted under the handle bar cover. and my battery has never went dead as it thinks the key is in it all the time.

This may give you an idea where you MIGHT want to put a hole IF you want at your own risk, of course.
