One the temperature reaches 3 bars....the Spyder starts to idle erratically. Its starts sputtering and spitting....and then backfires....If I give it some gas.....at first the engine is not happy....Major sputtering and backfireing....after a few seconds of this....the idle normalizes and the spyder runs fine......Anybody know what this could be? It all started after the last Steering update a few months ago. I also have a hindle exhaust and Evoluziones O2 modifier. If somebody can give me a hint....I could begin trying to fix it....its an annoying problem that doesnt go away and its embarrassing at stop lights. ANy help would greatly be appreciated. Thanks :P

did you get the update for the update?
if you had update 2009-2 only, then you need to get the second update 2009-4
the first update could cause sputting issuses, see post on here for more details
could be a issue with idle control valve or engine temp sensor giving a bad reading
but have your dealer check to see wich update was performed
and maybe check the sensor outputs while at the dealer and look for any codes
good luck

Did you try the extended battery disconnect to properly reset the ECU, etc? I'd disconnect the battery in the evening, hook it up in the morning and give it a shot.

One of the updates involved increasing the time that the purge valve remained open in order to draw more fumes out of the evap cannister.Unfortunately,this can cause an overly lean condition at low RPM.To check for this problem, temporarily squeeze the hose from the cannister to the purge valve closed with a hose clamp. If the sputtering stops, you have found your problem. Upgrade number 2 deals with this problem in stock bikes with stock O2 sensors. With your mods you may have to do a cannisterectomy and plug the purge valve hose permanently.

Did this start after the o2 modifired? If so remove it and see if that will fix it. I've found that after a muffler change, any power claims are mute. If you want to hot rod an engine, it's not going to happen with just bolt on parts. It's best to keep it stock KISS.

of course there is always the possibility that you have some condensation in your gas tank or picked up a little water in your last gas fill. Many off the shelf products will deal with a little water in your gas and help clean your fuel system too. I hope it is something simple so your Spyder starts behaving itself again. Good Luck.

Mine started doing that a while ago. Over time the erratic running (it used to drop onto one cylinder) moved up the rev range and became quite a problem in traffic.

The problem was a leaking Y pipe gasket. This allowed air into the exhaust that caused the exhaust oxygen sensor to try to 'correct' the mixture. Replacing the Y pipe gaskets cured the problem instantly.

It is possible that your gaskets were disturbed when the Hindle was fitted. Check the joints for movement. If there is any, try tightening the clamp.

The gaskets are supposed to be replaced at the 20000km service in an case, but it isn't worth waiting for if you are having a lot of trouble.

Cheers;

Pogo.

during a group ride Christmas parade, i noticed that 5 out of 10 spyders ran as you described, including mine ( has done that since new). everyone said "it's normal". it isn't. just confirmed today after one hour of gridlock ride in san francisco. my 08 spyder se5 ran like clockwork. recommend you replace your evaporative system purge valve. very happy i did...
