If you remove the tunk, there may be enough room in front of the engine. However, you don't want to cover the VSS electronic connection there, you also have to protect it from the heat. Perhaps between the Oil resiviour, and the oil cooler. There may be enough room to mount it next to the existing battery. You would need to fabricate a mounting bracket.
the Isolator is a good idea, have you checked this site out for them? It has some very good info along with some wiring dieagrams:

Thanks Tony, all good ideas. And thanks for the link. Any ideas on what battery would work for me? That's the part I'm a little fuzzy on.

I saw that and I'm considering that as an option. Trying to find a place that doesn't require me to remove it except once in a blue moon.

Look into swapping out your 30 amp stator with the 50 amp stator that is on the RT. You will likely need to change the regulator/rectifier too, and the main breaker.

That really sounds more complicated than I want to deal with. Perhaps someone can chime in here on this.

Not really this shouldn't require any modifications, just bolt on replacements. Talk to your dealer, and see about getting the replacement parts, and if the mounts are different. I have my doubts that they will be different, since this stuff mounts on/in the motor.
Parts you need:
These parts will all be for the RT-S
Stator/magneto
Voltage regulator/rectifier and fuse
main power fuse/breaker
Basicly you would be swapping your charging system with the upgraded on for the RT-S.

Adding a second battery is not a solution. Even if you did run 2, they would need to be deep cycle batteries (longer charge times), and you would have to limit your trip length and destination. Length would be dependant on the amount of reserve power you have, and the destination would need a place to plug in a charger (which you would need to bring along).
BTW, I looked into swapping out my 30amp charging system on my Victory with a 50amp one. Got the thumbs up from the dealer and he thought that was a great idea if I plan to ad some powered devices. It would just be a simple set of parts to swap out
