With some very hot weather soon has anybody been thinking about those Fan Controllers to keep your Spyder cooler.
They sound good keeping the temp down to 3 to 4 bars.

I put one in a couple of months ago - it works great! I have it adjusted so that I never go over 4 bars....never, not even in stop and go traffic in high temps - I gave that a try on a recent trip to the LA area. It is nice not to worry about the bike getting so darn hot - I used to get 5 and 6 bars in traffic - that is just to hot IMO! This mod should add to engine life over the long haul.
The Spal unit from Evo is plug and play.

It will cost me US$225 to get one here so I'm not sure yet,

I have read some guy fitted a manual on/off switch so he could turn the fan on in stop/go traffic before it showed 5 or 6 bars.

SPAL is the name of the comopany that makes the unit. You can buy it from evoluzione.com. They take the fan relay from SPAL and make it an easy plug and play set up with all the proper water tight plugs to the attachments. You easily program the relay with a low temp setting where fan comes on half speed and a high setting where fan is at full speed. I have my low setting at 3 and a half bars(90 seconds after 3 bars dislayed I set the low temp). And when 4 bars displayed that was my high temp setting.
It took me about 3 hours to install, but, I also added the led light showing when the fan is on and a switch that allows me to turn the fan on manually if I want to, both on the dash.

Great peace of mind when you are stuck in traffic!

For informational purposes only - not a recommendation - I installed a simple manual switch with inline fuse (one could also add a relay) to turn on the fan whenever I feel like it. The switch is in parallel with the Spyder's own fan controller- meaning the fan will still turn on if Spyder reaches 5 bars by way of Spyder's controller. Note that if you install another fan controller it probably means that the Spyder's fan controller is disconnected.

My Spyder temperature tends to increase whenever at low speeds-when I am slowing down in my neighborhood and when stopped at traffic lights. I automatically turn it on in these conditions and temp remains steady 3 bars.

Also on hot days if I notice gauge is at 4 bars I also turn it on, it quickly cools back down to 3 bars. I also leave it on for 20-30 seconds after I ride it into my garage and turn it off-helps cool down and clear out gas fumes.

Yes I read a post with photos on the other forum about a simple manual switch to turn the fan on and off so I will give that a go first, I will mainly just need to use it in stop/go traffic,
and using it in the garage when getting home is a good idea I have pulled into my garage at times or other places to stop with it on 4 or 5 bars.

I used a switch with a rubber boot to keep the rain out, Photo shows the place I installed it.
One wire from the fuse box up to the switch then down and joined into the BLUE wire that runs from the fan to the plug.

I am the one who installed the manual override switch (or at least I was the guinea pig on the mod).

I installed the fan controller two months ago. I set it up to turn on 50% somewhere between 3 and 4 bars. I say that because it's not something I can quantify. It took 8 minutes to go from 2 to 3 bars, so I waited 4 minutes into the 3rd bar. The fan turns on 50% after it reaches 3 bars, and goes to full fan power about a minute after reaching 4 bars.

Since then, I have yet see 5 bars. The early fan activation aparently doesn't allow the motor to reach heat saturation. Completely satisfied with the modification.

ok guys
putting this over ride switch in , just a quick question did you just tap into a 12 volt power supply at the back of the fuse box it looks a bit congested behind it or is their another point to access?or could l just put an inline fuse from the battery to the switch then to the fan. that would do the same would'nt it

That is what I did - just inline fuse from battery to switch to fan-not that this is a recommendation to anyone else. A better approach might be to install a aux fuse/relay box from battery to switch to fan and the relay is activated by spare switched 12V from Spyder's fuse box.
, making it easy for other add-ons later if needed. I may do this over winter storage, which for me starts tomorrow.
