Hi,

I have been reviewing my choices for trailering the SpYder around.

I could get a general utility trailer with ramp for about $1,500 and add about $200 to make it work with the SpYder.

I could bet a similar all aluminum utility trailer with ramp for about $2,000 and add about $200 to make it work with the SpYder.

I could get one that is more exotic http://www.adventuresportsproducts.com/ind...ort-Transports2 for about $5,000 complete. This one does a curtsy (sp?) and lowers itself so you can drive on with no separate ramp -- and has lots more positive virtues including a rock shield and a properly sprung ride. Lots of money -- but . . .

Does anyone have any experience with this AST2 (now AST3 is for the SpYder -- I am told) trailer?

Thanks,
Bill Gargan

I purchased one of the first AST2 Spyder trailers from Jim. The link below is the post, pics, and upgrades I did on the trailer. I don't think the model name of the trailer has changed.

If you are seriously considering the AST2, contact me and I'll give you all of the pros/cons of purchasing from Jim. :)

I would love to hear of your experiences. I had noticed this thread before. Somehow I thought you had built this thing from scratch and were simply making changes and improvements to your original design.

Not sure who Jim is -- but, I am in Madison, NH. My nearest regional distributor is in Wilmington, MA and my nearest sales agent is in Steep Falls, ME. It is this guy in ME that I have been chatting with.

He tells me that they only recently added the AST3 to the line and the website is not yet updated.

Thanks,
Bill Gargan

I have a 7X16 regualar old 1999 Big Tex Flat Bed Car Trailer....Nothing special....Hauls the Spyder just fine without any mods....Regualar old Ratchet Tie Downs keep it in place just fine....I have also hauled it twice in a U Haul trailer without any problems.....The biggest problem is the Ramps on any Regular trailer...On my Flat bed I just use the little Shorty Ramps that came with it and one of my ATV Bi-folds in the middle...Works like a Champ... :beerchug1:

Nice trailer Erik. I haven't seen many with roll-up sides. Your own design?

yep, own design ... the roll up sides are handy, you can easily get to the bike from all sides, without having to open the backdoor and crawl next to the bike to get at the front .... is also less weight ... I can also get the little trailer off easily .... security is the only thing ... but they can't steal the spyder from the side ... and the back ramp has a lock ....

Just bought a tandem axle 7x12 enclosed trailer with rear ramp and side door at the front from factory in GA that works great. We tow it with our Rv and it serves as a garage every night when i get home. i just drive right in and back out in the am; keeps all dry and secure.

I have the AST 2 for my wife's rs. We love the trailer. Pulls great behind the motorhome or the pick up. I also added a single chock for my harley. The only problem, I can't take both bikes at the same time.

Unfortunately, she would rather ride her bike when we travel, not on the back of mine. Anyway, you can't go wrong with it. Wanna buy mine???

I have one of the AST3 formerly called AST2, I used it to trailer my Spyder from NJ the BRP event in IL and could not be happier with it. I was surprise how well the rock shield protected the Spyder in heavy rain and very glad I had the shield as there are a few rocks chips on both the shield and one of the fenders now. It's not a cheep trailer and there are many choices out there for much less and more if you get a covered model but I went with the AST3 because of the ease of use the remote feature and the look of my Spyder on it and do not like not being able to see out the inside mirror that a covered trailer would give.

Hi guys. I have to ask this, but why are people so concerned with trailering their bike instead of actually riding it somewhere?

Thanks.

To each his own. I rode mine 3000 miles to California and trailered it 300 miles to SITS. My wife really doesn't get a kick out of riding 8 hours a day so when she goes, we trailer.

I just went and bought a 5X8 landscape trailer from Lowes. Added plywood for the bottom to prevent road trash from blowing thru. Also had to add 4x4 side by side on each side to lift the front wheels to clear the metal sides. You could use a single 4x6 on each side for the lifted ramp. When loaded the front bumper overhangs the front trailer by a few inches and the trailer tailgate closes just fine. Towed it 2000 mile with no troubles using normal rachet straps. Sorry for no pictures, triler and Spyder are stored for the winter... for now!! :) :wall:

I have an Eight foot wide snowmobile trailer for hauling our two ATV's side by side facing forward. It has a chip shield on the front and tilts for loading. I have used it to trailer spyders before and they just drive on and strap down nicely. With a wheel chock I would also have room to trailer my bike beside it also if needed. Snowmobile trailers work well and you can usually find them used at a fair price. I like the aluminium models they are very light and tow nicely.

Dear Bill and others,

I went the open 6 X 12 ft commercial way with four 15" wheels. This is my third trailer and this is the charm, as the saying goes. Down here it cost me about $1,600.00. It came with a folding ramp that was covered with 14 guage expanded, for lack of the correct word, metal that I replaced with aluminum diamond finish sheet metal as the trailer's floor came. I also installed an electric winch to pull up either my HD s/c or my Spyder and another winch to handle the folding ramp. So as not to void the guarantee of my car I didn't tap into the car's electrical system for current. I spent $50.00 on an auto battery and $20.00 for #8 cables and a suitable conector. This is carried in the rear of my car. About all I do is push buttons. It takes me 10 minutes to load and another 10 minutes to unload. The 4 wheels corrected the sway I had from the two previous 2 wheeled trailers and I can drive ANY speed I want. I know four 15" wheels is overkill but there is no sway anymore. Arthur---Mexico City

Hello Bill,

I use a trailer that I purchased for my Harley-Davidson Street Glide. It's a 6 X 10, single axle, made by Pace. It has the rear drop down door/ramp. I installed tie down devices on the floor, and use them to strap down the Spyder. The only draw back, is that the width of the door opening is just 1 inch wider than the outside of the Spyder's width. So I have to be careful when loading. The nice thing though, is that it stays dry and protected, and it's pretty secure. I also installed hooks and shelves in the trailer to hold and store all the related riding gear and apparel. Hope this helps.
